Chapter 2

Kevin stared at the now limp form of his sworn enemies' cousin without a clue as to what to do next. 'What I'm asking...is for someone like you to let someone like me care...for...you.'

Had she really said that?

The words bounced around in his head, echoing again and again; care for you care for you care for you. Had she really lifted her hand to his cheek without any hesitation whatsoever? Had this really happened? Could this have really happened?

He should ignore it, he should ignore it and chalk it up to a failed last-ditch attempt and return to killing Ben Tennyson...but...but...for once Kevin hesitated, and for the life of him he couldn't say why. It was just the way she had looked when she had been pleading for her family's life, she had looked so scared, so helpless.

He knew how that felt.

Kevin shook his head viciously at that, was he actually empathizing here?! He needed to turn and do what he needed to do, he needed to walk away and kill Tennyson. Kill Tennyson kill Tennyson kill Tennyson, he chanted in his head. He needed to do that, he would do that, he would turn and do just- the conflicted boy was cut off from his thoughts by a low feral growl and a presence behind him.

Ah, so the cavalry had arrived. So be it.

His fist was still encased in metal and he whirled around with it raised high and ready for blood only to see something that wasn't Tennyson and definitely was unusual: a...white tiger? He was no Einstein but weren't those seen in colder places, namely not anywhere near here in this region of North America?

That became the last of his worries when it crouched down, uttered another growl and suddenly there were two tigers both in the same position, both poised and ready to attack. His gut clenched, he couldn't outrun these, he wasn't a nature boy but he knew that and got ready to fight when a booming voice entered his head and flames exploded behind his eyes. You have both called and we will aid.

He uttered a surprised cry, sinking to his knees and holding his head in an attempt to keep his skull from shattering everywhere from the explosions that had suddenly started going off in his brain. He heard a small whimper and looked over to see Gwen also in a state of pain, curling into the fetal position with her hands wrapped around her head as if she was trying to block out some loud noise.

His gut dropped to his feet, seeing her in pain for some reason had a strange effect on him. Fear not for her, this will only be temporary that voice said and he saw one tiger walk over to her and lower it's mouth to her her head, open and showing off an impressive array of pearly white fangs that looked like they could slice through flesh like a hot knife through butter.

No...

He didn't think, just reacted, rising to his feet and stumbling over to the two as best he could on wobbly legs, pushing the humongous beast's broad face away from hers as best he could. It made a surprised growl-like sound and pulled it's head away which gave Kevin plenty of room to collapse on top of her quivering body when he lost his balance and gravity which had tripled by now took over.

He had pressed himself harder before -he had spent 2 years in the Null-Void for crying out loud!- and now he was down after barely even fighting, this shouldn't be draining him so much but his limbs felt spent and no matter how loudly he screamed at them to get up they wouldn't budge. It felt like iron chains had been wrapped around jelly, and he felt like a pinned, exhausted beast after a long chase.

Then he realized: he wasn't exhausted, they were holding him down!

But how could a couple of animals have magic powers or something? Because we are more than just mere tigers that voice answered him, and the pain began afresh. Kevin cried out again and bit back tears as hard as he could before it all suddenly abated and darkness blotted out his vision. A couple of large white paws and a pair of teal blue eyes were the last thing he saw before everything went dark and he was plunged into dreams.

Gwen looked at the darkness around her, this was probably a dream though she could never really remember being this alert during her dreams, but that was O.K.

At least the pain had stopped, and at least now she could move her arms and legs for which she was extremely grateful, she hated being immobile. This place was completely pitch-black, she could barely see two feet in front of her but it was a comforting darkness, a warm one where all of her exhaustion and fear felt distant like she was hearing voices from underwater.

She felt safe here.

The darkness started to shift, she could feel a change taking place and the space around her swirled, then suddenly she found herself in a forest scene. It was a clearing not unlike the one she had just left plus a serene pond fed by a crystalline waterfall that made small splashing sounds where the water poured on the rocks.

It was still night, and stars still twinkled overhead but the moon they surrounded was way bigger than the one in her conscious world and threw a spotlight on the pond where some lilies floated placidly and reflected off of the spray of the waterfall making each individual droplet look like diamonds.

Fireflies winked everywhere, she was somewhere beautiful.

No one said anything, but the sudden feeling like she wasn't alone spoke as loud as if someone had. Turning around she saw Kevin leaning against a tree looking at the pond, but she didn't feel fear or surprise, and he didn't look like the Kevin who she had seen in the woods.

This Kevin didn't look angry or pained at all, in fact he looked kind of neutral, an emotion she hadn't really seen on his face before and when he looked over at her the expression changed to one of slight surprise and he looked her up and down.

It was then Gwen noticed that her clothes had changed and that she was in a soft strapless ivory dress that left her shoulders bare and traveled down the length of her body to whisper at her feet, she also felt her hair done up and when she put a hand up to it she felt the soft, cool petals of a rose tucked into it.

Kevin also looked different beyond his facial expression: instead of the cargo pants and ripped black shirt she had seen him in now his hair was combed and he was in black pants and a white cotton shirt, her heart fluttered and skipped a beat before settling back into it's natural (if slightly elevated) rhythm.

Was this a date? It oddly enough looked like one.

No one said anything, but it felt like he had just said a nervous 'Hey' and she looked up at him and their eyes met, she didn't say anything but it felt like she responded with a slightly anxious 'Hey' of her own.

He nodded, nervousness was radiating off of the both of them in nearly visible rays and she stared at her feet where there suddenly lay a...picnic basket? 'Um O.K just what the heck is going on here?' she heard Kevin say without saying, and her thoughts mirrored his own statement 'Not exactly sure.' she responded then bent over to pick up the basket out of curiosity of it's continents, the rose in her hair falling out when she did.

Kevin was there in that instant, picking it up and they both straightened to lock eyes again with the butterflies in her stomach leaping to her throat before settling back down, she could almost hear butterflies in his stomach doing the same maneuver.

'U-um, here.' he offered it to her; a yellow rose, her favorite and she felt herself blush when he tucked it behind her ear then nodded in thanks. 'Thank-you.' she said, offering a smile and a little bit of pink dusted his cheeks as well making him look rather adorable and she had to hold back a giggle.

In the conscious world she knew they would have been fighting, especially if Ben had been there. But in here it felt like neither of them would have been capable of violence if they had wanted, it just felt like two humans were here to talk and she decided she liked it.

She looked up to see that her and Kevin's faces had suddenly become closer, much too close for comfort and the blush had gone from his face to be replaced by a look of intense concentration, and something else.

'U-um hey,' he began, looking away to stare at the ground to their right; he looked uncomfortable now, very uncomfortable. 'Yes?' she asked, but he only shook his head and didn't meet her eyes 'Nothing.' he said, and she huffed out a silent breath.

Raising her hand to his face in a manner similar to when they had been in the conscious world, she placed it on his cheek and was surprised to feel a near involuntary flinch when she touched his flesh.

Like he had been struck before, and didn't want to be hurt again.

This just caused her to be extra careful when she made him look at her. 'Yes?' she asked again, and his hand rose to entrap hers as he sighed and looked her in the eye. 'Did you really mean what you said back there?' he asked, holding her hand tight like he didn't want the contact to end and rubbing his rough, calloused thumb across it.

'Yes.' Gwen said definitely, without even thinking though she couldn't help but jump at the sudden and unexpected interaction and the electrical shock that zipped through her arm at his touch.

His brow furrowed in confusion, 'Why?' he asked, 'After all I've done, why would you even think about being near someone like me?'.

Fireflies winked around his face, illuminating it and Gwen saw the torture his soul and heart had gone through and her heart lurched for him. It was written in the lines on his forehead, the small indents on the bridge of his nose, the tension around his mouth and eyes; to anyone who took the time to look it was evident that this boy had been through tragedy after tragedy and was simply trying to make it stop.

She reached up and moved a few stray strands of hair out of his face, doing her best to smooth the lines of tension on his forehead away and beneath her comforting touch his face began to relax.

'Because Kevin,' she said, 'a true monster is someone out for blood just for the sake of the blood, someone who truly gets off on death and destruction and you're none of those things. If you were a true monster like you said you were back there I wouldn't be alive right now, I would be dead and Ben and Grandpa would be dead too.'. He looked stunned, utterly stunned and simply stared at her speechlessly as her hand trailed down his shoulder to rest right over his heart.

'You're not a monster Kevin,' she said softly, feeling his heart rate jump under her palm, 'I know you aren't.'.

What happened next was just a blur of movement, and Gwen had no time to react.
O.K this is FINALLY up I am so sorry people for how unbelievably long it took but inspiration has been coming in random patches to about 20 plus stories I have going on at this moment so yeah... it took a crapload of time. Anyways I'm going to do a quick re-upload soon (sometime) of the first chapter because I frankly feel that I cheated the whole magical ritual/ceremony thing with the shortness so thaat's also going to delay me writing the third chapter.
